Edit Template Contents, Not the Template
The link down by the bottom of a template that says "Click to edit (global operation)"... don't click that. That's there for power users. You can edit what your template contains by editing the parameters passed into the template on the page itself (using the "edit" tab at the top of the screen).
Don't Add Pages Via Categories
In order to create a page, you need to make a link to it somewhere. Use an article page or your personal page. You can always delete the link later. One place you shouldn't put a link to it is in the description of a category, reached by going to a category and clicking the "edit" tab. If you want your page to be included in a category, follow the instructions below.
Don't Forget Category Tags
It's easy! Just put: [[Category:Stuff]] to add your page to the stuff category. If
Oh Noes, I misspelled my page name!
Fear not. The "Move" tab can change the name of your page. If you don't have the "move" tab available, contact your friendly neighborhood admin (one good way to do that is to put a message on the talk page of the article to be moved saying, "Please move this to" and the new article name.). Note that moving an article will add a redirect to the old article. If you want to be rid of the redirect, browse to it, remove the #REDIRECT [[NewArticleName]] text from it, go to the disc page and add a note saying you'd like it to be deleted, and an admin will nab it in their next sweep.
Try to keep personal information out of your user page
Internet bots can harvest AIM screen names and e-mail addresses. Invision Powerboard has ways of obscuring this information so that bots have more trouble getting at it, but the wiki does not. If you absolutely must post contact info, do it in a way that bots won't understand.
When aping someone else's page for the template, remember to edit everything.
This way you don't have half of your character and half of theirs. The preview button is a good thing in this case.
